The ground was broken for St. Pius X Catholic School on Palm Sunday, March 25, 1956. The decision was made to build the school before building the church. When the school opened its doors in September of that same year, the faculty consisted of three Trinitarian Sisters and one lay teacher. The enrollment that year was 189 children. On March 16, 1958, the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.), graciously accepted the missionary work of St. Pius X School.
With the advent of full teaching staff, the school expanded to accommodate additional grades. As enrollment increased, the building was modified to meet the needs of the children. Classrooms were added in 1962-63 and again in 1995. The student body averages 200, with students ranging from Junior-Kindergarten to grade 8.
In the Summer of 2022, an entire wing of the school was completely renovated with new flooring, drop ceilings, lighting, better air distribution, new whiteboards, new lockers and cubbies, and other new furniture. Visiting alumni and our alumni parents have exclaimed with excitement at the new renovations at the school.
The tradition of St. Pius X Catholic School has always been to provide quality education in an environment where children can strive to become responsible Christian adults. The administration and faculty, in conjunction with parents, continue to encourage and assist each child with spiritual, academic, physical, and social development.
Our school logo has gone through several changes over the years. In the late summer of 2022, a new logo was designed in conjunction with the parish logo.
Traditionally incorporated on a papal coat of arms, keys are used here to symbolize Pope Pius' papacy from 1903 - 1914. Pope Pius placed a renewed liturgical emphasis on the Eucharist, saying, "Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to Heaven," and encouraged frequent reception of Holy Communion.
The Chi Rho is used here to symbolize Christ in the Eucharist and St. Pius X's motto: "To restore all things in Christ."
The dove in the red triangle symbolizes the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, who founded our church in 1955. You can find this symbol on the floor of our sanctuary and the gate to our baptistery.
The anchor cast into a stormy sea, the blue background with waves, are a nod to the bottom half of Pope Pius' papal shield when he became Bishop of Mantua and was inspired by Hebrews Chapter 6: "The hope we have is the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul." In addition, the water and anchor symbolize our physical, regional area here in Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay, as well as the significant military presence surrounding our church and school here in Norfolk.
The book symbolizes education and knowledge. It is set in the navy and sky blue colors of the IHM Sisters, who have taught at St. Pius X Catholic School since 1958. Inscribed on the book's pages is the Latin Phrase: “Tota Pulchra Es O Maria” which is the motto of the IHM Sisters and translates to: “You are most beautiful, O Mary.”
Our style guide is available to assist you in using our new logo and how we “brand” our school. Before using the logo, please ask for permission to use the logo. We will need to know what it will be used for and the purpose. We also ask that you review the style guide on the proper use of the logo. Included in the guide are:
